Tool Name * SUNTANS
Category * Numerical Model:
What step(s) in framework * 2b. Pressures and Impacts
Description * SUNTANS is an advanced coastal numerical model. It solves the Navier-Stokes equation under the Boussinesq approximation. Its main strengths are that it is unstructured, non-hydrostatic and uses parallel computers.
Inputs Collaboration with Stanford University
Data Quality Required Good
Modification Required Numerical modelling always requires code modifications and improvements
Expertise Required Programming skills and an Oceanography background are essential to implement this tool
Outputs SUNTANS in the Pentland Firth example allows a better understanding of tidal races and hydrodynamic characterisitcs of a such high energy area. This information has been used to address the environmental baseline linking ecosystems with physical conditions
Spatial and Temporal Scales It is multiscale
