h3. Flood Risk Management !fews01s.jpg|align=right,width=410,height=266, hspace=10!

Many people all over the world are threatened by floods from rivers, estuaries and the sea. Through flood risk management we try to reduce the loss of life, distress and economic damage caused by floods. In addition, through flood risk management we try to adapt to the impacts of climate change and economic development.

Deltares specializes in research and consultancy services for integrated flood risk management. Optimal design of flood management schemes is supported by flood risk analyses using advanced tools such as our state-of-the-art inundation modelling system Delft-1D2D. Deltares also has worldwide experience in the implementation of advanced flood early warning systems for major river systems.

h4. EU Directive on flood risk

The aim of the EU Directive is to reduce and manage the risks that floods pose to human health, the environment, infrastructure and property. To support the implementation of the Directive we have carried out research among others within the Floodsite research project: the largest ever EC research project on floods. Our input focused on the development of methodologies for flood risk assessment and management as well as the dissemination of the results to the professional community.

The Directive takes a three step approach:
# preliminary flood risk assessment,
# flood risk maps and
# flood risk management plans.

We have the knowledge and tools to support Member States in the implementation of the Directive.
