<insert text>Modelling extreme sea levels with global tide and surge model
{panel}
My name is Sanne Muis and I am a PhD student at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VU University in Amsterdam. My PhD research is part of the EU project RISES-AM, which investigates the risks of high-end sea level rise scenarios and adaptation options in coastal zones. The main topic of my dissertation is flood risk in global deltas. Currently, there are few global-scale data available on the occurrences of extreme sea levels. The use of hydrodynamic modelling approaches to estimate flood risk is generally limited to regional cases. However, the allowance of a flexible mesh in the DFLOW-FM software has enabled the development of a global tide and surge model with sufficient resolution in coastal areas, while maintaining computational efficient. By forcing the model with tidal potential and meteorological fields, I am developing a global hindcast of sea levels from 1979 to 2014. Based on these time-series, we can estimate the return periods of extreme sea levels by applying extreme value statistics.
