Introduction

This tutorial shows how to use the Hydro Network functionality within in Delftshell. This tutorial is subdivided in:

  1. Working with Hydro Network.

  2. Import of a network. In this part you learn how to import existing networks.

(warning) For this tutorial you need some data files. You can download these files here. Please download and unzip these files before you start with this tutorial.

Working with Hydro Network

Create a new Hydro Network (Branches)

You have to start with a new project, thenproject.
First you have to add an empty network to your project:

  • Go to the project explorer Project Explorer.
  • Rightclick on project project1.
  • Select new data,Select network (down in the menu)(NB Network helemaal onderaan, Mwell weg?) Add > New Data.
  • Select Network.
  • Press Ok.

In the same way you have to add a map:

  • Go to the project explorer Project Explorer.
  • Rightclick on project project1.
  • Select new data,
  • Select map
  • Add > New Data.
  • Select Map.
  • Press Ok.

In the map navigator you can add a layer to the map:

  • Add a new layer to the map by using the rightclick > Add Layer or pressing the Add New Layer button on top of the map navigator.
  • Browse to river_sel.shp.

  • Select Network1 from the project explorer.
  • Drag the network on the map (central view).

(warning) Now you see in maps a treeview with the network as subset op the map and the network editor is active. You can start editing now!

You can create branches in two ways:

  1. Create New Branch, this option is used to draw very accurate. You can add curvepoints on exact locations.
  2. Create New Branch (Auto): With this option you can draw a Network fluently. Curvepoints are added automatically.

  • Select Create New Branch (Point and Click).
  • Draw one of the branches by clicking.
  • Stop with a doubleclick.

Now you can try some network editing tools:

  • Move Feature (smart), when you drag a node the network moves proportionally, when you drag a line, the network moves integrally.
  • Move Feature, when you drag a node this individual node moves.
  • Insert Cruvepoint in Branch, you can add curve points and move them to make the location of your network more accurate.
  • Delete Object (gives error), you have to draw your branch again.

The endpoints of the branch are automatically assigned as boundaries (see map legend). Adding another branch to a boundary automatically changes a boundary to a normal node.

  • Connect the other branch to the first branch.

Now you can finish your network

  • Again select Create New Branch(Auto).
  • Draw a new branch downstream from the confluence.

Import a network

from Sobek

There are two ways to add a cross section:

  1. Schematical: In this way you can add a cross-section on a specified location along the river.
  2. Geometry based: You put a cross-section on the exact measurement locations.

To add a schematical cross-section:

  • Click Create Cross Section.
  • Click on four locations along channel1.

To add a geometry based cross-section:

  • Click Create Cross Section.
  • Drag two lines perpendicular to channel2. Click on Select Feature(s) to stop creating cross-sections.

Now you can adjust the cross-sections in the Network view:

  • Doubleclick on CS0001 in the network view.
  • Click on Cross-section view.

  • Adjust the bottom level(z) of cross-section 1 for example in <-5> m at y= 150m and <-8> m at 300m.

  • In the same way, adjust the bottom level(z)of cross-section 2 for example in in <-15> m at y= 150m.

You can use Toggle History to compare cross-sections with each other.

  • In the cross-section view, click on Toggle History.
  • Click on cross-section CS0003.
  • Click on cross-section CS0002.
  • Click on cross-section CS0001.

Now you see cross-section related to cross-section 2 and 3.

Working with Structures

  • Create a network with branches and a cross-sections on each branch.
  • Select create weir from the structure tools.
  • Click on a branch to create a weir.
  • On another branch, put two weirs on the same location to create a compound structure.
  • Select create pump from the structure tools.
  • Click on another branch to create a pump.

The structures are added to the network. Now we can adjust the settings.

  • Click on the weir.

You see the cross-sectional view of the weir with the nearest cross-section in the background. The default settings of the weir are OK.
(warning) The cross-sectional view cannot be displayed when there is no cross-section on the branch.

  • Click on the compound structure

You see the cross-sectional view of a compound structure with the nearest cross-section in the background. This compound structure consist of two weirs, but more weirs or other structures can be added. The background is colored red as a warning, because the two weirs overlap. To adjust the weirs:

  • Click on the weir in the cross-sectional view.
  • Adjust the width of one weir in 50m.
  • Click on the other weir in the cross-sectional view.
  • Adjust the offset in 250m.
  • Adjust the width in 50m.

To adjus the settings of the pump:

  • Click on the pump.
  • Deselect the control level on the delivery side.
  • Adjust the control levels on the suction side in -4m for switch-on and -5 for switch-off.

Import a network

This section describes two possibilities to import a network:

  1. From vector layers (shp, gdb): You can import vector layers to create a new netwerk.
  2. From SOBEK: You can import a network you used in previous versions of SOBEK.

You can create a network based on a vector layer.

  • Start with a new project.
  • In the project explorer rightclick on project1.
  • Click Add > New Data > Map > Ok.
  • Add a new layer to the map.
  • Browse to river_sel.shp.

  • Click Add > New Data > Network > Ok.
  • Drag the network to the map (central view).

  • Select (using shift) the lines in the shape file.
  • Click Network in the menu.
  • Click Import Branches.

Now the branches are imported.

Import a network from SOBEK

To import a network used in a previous versions of SOBEK:

  • Start with a new project.
  • Click on File.
  • Click on Import data.
  • Choose SOBEK network file.

  • Browse to Loenen.lit.
  • Select folder 1.
  • Select network.tp.

To view the network on a map:

  • Rightclick on project1.
  • Select Add Data.
  • Select Map > Ok.

Now a map is added in the project explorer.

  • Select the network from the project explorer.
  • Drag the network on the map (central view).
