In order to use Aquality (formerly: Nitrate App) for EC measurements, the following materials are required:

  • Hanna Dist4 EC meter
  • Sticker with markers for the EC meter
  • Smartphone with Aquality (app can be downloaded from the Google Playstore or iPhone store)
  • Cup/container to take the sample from the ditch

Steps for taking the first measurement

  1. Install the Aquality app. You can install the app from the Google App Store (for Android) or the App Store (iOS)
  2. Be equipped with a Hanna Dist 4 EC-meter (Figure 1)
  3. Place the sticker with markers on the EC meter above the screen on the Hanna logo (see the indicated red box). The stickers can be obtained by sending an email to aquality@deltares.nl or printed independently with this file.

Steps for taking a measurement

  1. Take a water sample with as little mud, plants and critters from the ditch as possible. Before you use it, rinse the beaker well with the water to be sampled
  2. Turn on the Hanna Dist4 EC meter and place it in the cup
  3. In the Aquality app go to the measurement screen
  4. At first measurement: Choose the water type you are going to measure in. The water type selection screen appears only for the first measurement. After the first measurement it is possible to change the water type when sending the measurement.
  5. Take the measurement. Make a scan of the EC meter by clicking on the screen. Make sure that the EC meter is in focus and that all vertices of the sticker are recognized. When the green frame appears the scan can be made by pressing on the screen of your Smartphone[1]. Take the picture as much as possible out of the sun so that there is no reflection in the image.
  6. Check the EC reading and send the measurement. If the measurement is not read correctly cancel the measurement and take a new picture. The concentration is displayed both in EC (mS/cm) and in chloride concentration (mg/l)[1]. Het is mogelijk tekst informatie toe te voegen onder opmerkingen voordat u de meting verstuurd.

[1] For the conversion of EC to chloride concentration we use the relationship as derived for concentrations in Zeeland by De Louw et al. (2011). Note that this relationship may differ locally.

You can find the complete user manual for EC measurements here.
