In Delft3D there are two methods to store coordinates:

  • Cartesian
  • Spherical
    SOBEK stores output in a cartesian system. If you start an empty SOBEK session the default is to show the Dutch Map stored in Amersfoort New system.

  1. In the current version of the program, the hydrodynamic grid connects the 3D coördinates of the cell centres of the computation grid points. This may change in a future release to represent the bounding boxes of the grid cells.
  2. These fields are expanded depending on the contents of the data file. Units: temperature in °C, salinity in ppt, secondary flow in m/s, sediment concentrations in kg/m$^3$, turbulent kinetic energy in m$^2$/s$^2$, energy dissipation in m$^2$/s$^3$. The user defined tracer concentrations are in unknown units.
  3. These locations are only valid if the correct drying/flooding setting is selected in the file options dialog.
  4. Units depend on the model input. By default the units are m$^3$/sm where the volume represents m$^3$ stone. It can also be switched to m$^3$/sm where the volume represents m$^3$ bed volume, or kg/sm.
  5. New 2D and 3D fields of the same dimension as the grid are automatically detected. They are assumed to be located at water level points.

This test consists of multiple RE files. The deftop files are a previous version of the SOBEK river schematisation. The file specification has changed. Paul vd Berg has updated the sobcnv to convert old files to new files.

The following is a part of the file DEFTOP.1. I could not find a reference in the SOBEK documentation (chm help file). The first column seems to be an object. In this file it's either NODE or BRCH (branch?). The following columns seem to be paired. The line ends with the object name in lowercase.
So one line consists of:

  • id seems to be a non unique id, '001' is used for both a branch and a node.
  • nm might be the name, probably limited to 9 characters for some historical reason.
  • px looks like a cartesian coordinate for x

  • bn is probably a reference to a node (begin node?)
  • en is probably a reference to a node (end node)
  • al might be a reference to the length of the branch(in Cartesian space in m?)
