The FP7 project JERICO will organize a 2nd summerschool after the successful 2013 one at Malta, see the 2014 Jerico Summer School announcement at the JERICO website.

Dates

Topic The preliminary title of this summerschool is "From data to decisions". We aim to cover the entire marine and coastal information cycle from data gathering via data management, data dissemination, data analysis, data assimilation to data-based policy decisions. Location The location is split between (i) holiday resort "Kijkduin" located near the beach south of the Hague, near the Sand engine coastal observatory and (ii) the Deltares offices in Delft, both in the Netherlands. The holiday resort site is within walking distance from the beach where the largest Dutch coastal observatory "Sand engine" is located, to which we will pay informal and work visits. The Deltares offices are a 30 min bus ride inland and offer lecture theaters for the lectures and excellent computational facilities for hands-on exercises.

Audience The target group is 30 early career scientists plus scientifically oriented early career marine spatial planners (MSP). Students are expected to arrange for their own funding for travel and lodging. To facilitate minimal participation barriers across disciplines and (EU) countries, students will be offered affordable lodging at YMCA pricing level for single rooms in European cities (~ 300 EUR for 7 nights) in the "Kijkduin" holiday resort, in bungalows shared by 3 students (separate rooms).

Highlights treated for at least half a day:

• data gathering and instrumentation: incl. field trip to Dutch coastal observatory "Sand engine": HF Radar, Argus camera, jetski with DGPS+sonar by TU Delft spin-off shoremonitoring
• data and information cycle, data use for EU policy purposes: MSFD and WISE marine, EMECO by CEFAS (Jo Foden and David Mills)
• data management, quality, versioning, curation and cataloguing: OpenEarth, DOI citeability via DataCite (as in Pangea), Data Seal of Approval datacentre certification, INSPIRE and Google searching by 3TU Datacenter and DataCite partner TU Delft library
• (full day, monday june 16th) data analysis: variational analysis with DIVA, and EOF analysis with DINEOF by invited lecturer: Prof. J-M Beckers from University of Liège
• (full day, tuesday june 17th) data dissemination: EU portal landscape: 5 sessions:
  • EMODnet introduction, history, overview and outlook by EMODnet secretariat.
  • EMODnet physics lot + EuroGOOS by EuroGOOS deputy secretary Pattick Gorringe from SMHI
  • MyOcean: Hammarklint Thomas from SMHI
  • EurOBIS + ICES by Carlos Pinto from ICES (presenting on behalf of VLIZ too)
  • SeaDataNet: Peter Thijsse from MARIS BV
• (full day) data assimilation: introduction to data assimilation with OpenDA by lecturer Martin Verlaan of TU Delft/Deltares/OpenDA.
• big data: how to deal with data that extend the size of your local hard disk (> 2TB): OGC WPS, netCDF-CF-OPeNDAP, ESA G-POD-alikes

The "Kijkduin" lodging is available from the night june fri.13-sat.14 to night june thu.19-fri.20 (7 nights).

Travel
The kijkduin holiday resort can be reached with public transport:

• There is a direct train 4 times per hour from Amsterdam Schiphol airport to The Hague Central Station (Den Haag Central Station) (not Den Haag HS, which is another station), see for time table railway website www.ns.nl
• tram + 1.7 km walk
  • Take tram 3 from to stop Heliotroplaan (tram 3 on google maps)
  • walk from tram stop Heliotrooplaan to Kijkduin in 20 minutes (google maps)
• OR bus + 1 km walk google maps
