General

Creating a model for XBeach works slightly different than for Delft3D-FLOW and WAVE. Creating an XBeach model involves 4 steps:

  1. 'Draw grid outline': this is similar as for FLOW and WAVE. However, keep in mind that the origin should be offshore en the coast at 90 degrees from the right-side of this point.
  2. Define grid optimization settings. The grid for XBeach will be optimized in cross-shore and longshore direction. Settings related to this optimization are:
    1. Cross-shore direction: maximum dx (dx_max) and minimal dx (dx_min)
    2. Longshore direction: maximum dy (dy_max), minimal dy (dy_min) and longshore area of interest (%y)
  3. Define boundary forcing. Part of the optimization is based on storm surge level (SSL) and peak wave period (Tp). On top of that the user can define a significant wave height (Hs), wave direction (Wave dir), duration (T) and thetamin and thetamax.
  4. Click on: 'Generate grid and model'. The generation can take some time. Especially if you have selected a large area.

2D grid generation

Area models can only be created within the 'Quick Mode' of the Model Maker for XBeach.

1D grid generation

The Model Maker for XBeach has two additional possibilities to create a 1D (transect) XBeach model:
