The WELCOME IMS is developed and tested in 4 real world situations. This was done for Bitterfeld, Tarnowskie Góry and the harbour of Rotterdam and partially for the harbour of Antwerp. The results of the case studies of Bitterfeld, Tarnowskie Góry and Rotterdam are presented here, using the step-wise approach of the manual as key entry. Thus, the case studies can be regarded as examples of the application of the step-wise approach.

Next to the three megasites Port of Rotterdam, Bitterfeld and Tarnowskie Góry, the IMS approach was partially applied on the megasite Port of Antwerp.

In the frame of the WELCOME project, the conceptual model of the Port of Antwerp was described. In a second step, a first attempt was made to determine a risk-analysis based on a source-path-receptor model. However, due to limited resources and the poor availability of necessary and correct data to perform this analysis, the risk assessment was not applied on the total area of the port but only on a sub-part located between the 4th and 5th dock. For this sub-part, the administrative and geographical data that are present in the GIS of the Port of Antwerp (Geoport) were extended with soil and groundwater quality data that were transferred from the soil and groundwater quality database of the Flemish Waste Agency OVAM towards Geoport. In addition, a first attempt was made to calculate a pollutant flux on this sub-part using a source-path-receptor model and benzene as a test compound.

The data can only be seen as an example since they are based on a very limited amount of information. For a thorough IMS application on the Port of Antwerp, new soil investigations and further research is needed.

An overview of the IMS application in the Port of Antwerp can be downloaded from the following link: IMS application Antwerp.
