In this project three data assimilation techniques will compared, i.e. the performance of the assimilation of various water quality variables (including chlorophyll-a and water temperature) under the different techniques. The techniques that will be used are:
- Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF)
- Lagged-K EnKF
- DUD-EnKF
The EnKF is used in the current operational FEWS-NIER system. The benefit of this algorithm is that in operational systems runlength should be kept small in order to be able to run the complete simulation each day. Finally, the DUD-EnKF is used for non-lineair relationships and may improve the current simulation results. The Lagged-K EnKF is used to run EnKF with less ensembles.
For all three algorithms twin experiments and real-world application simulations will be set up.
