The EFDC water quality model is applied in a operational forecasting system used to simulate and predict the occurence of algae blooms in four major rivers in Korean Nakdong, Han, Geum and Yeongsan. The model is able to simulate algae concentrations as well as other water quality variables such as nutrients, oxygen, water temperature and includes options for controlling weirs. The model is run in OpenDA to support the data assimilation of algae forecasts. Geosystem Research Cooperation aims to extend OpenDA with new data assimilation techniques and perform modelling tests to investigate whether the forecast of algae blooms can be further improved using the different data assimilation techniques.
