Piping

The phenomenon of piping is a serious threat for the stability of embankments. It is a form of seepage erosion. High seepage pressures may remove soil material to such an extent that geotechnical structures may, and do, collapse. The mechanism of piping is conceptually modeled. It is implemented into the numerical groundwater flow programme MSeep. It predicts the critical hydraulic head across embankments due to piping. A single piping computation requires preparation skills and takes time in the order of dozens of minutes. In order to minimize this effort, an advanced piping rule for a schematized geometry has been worked out. This is accomplished by applying the technique of artificial neural networks. The piping rule is accommodated in MPiping with the use of 25000 MSeep computations.
