Verification of ShorelineS

to predict

on longshore transport rates and spit development

A case study of Lobito, Angola

ShorelineS is a new single line coastline model developed by IHE-Delft/Deltares. The grid in ShorelineS is vector-based, allowing for the free movement of the defined coastline sections. The latter allows for the modelling of long term drastic coastal changes which are difficult to model in existing coastline models (such as UNIBEST).

This thesis contributes to the further development of ShorelineS focussing on:

1. Validation of longshore sediment transport module (LST) of ShorelineS: An essential first step for a (new) coastline models is the correct estimation of the LST, which drives the coastal evolution. In this part the wave transformation module of ShorelineS was assessed. The concept of the ‘Dynamic Boundary’ (such as can be found in UNIBEST) was implemented in ShorelineS to better schematize the wave transformation for reorienting coastlines.

2. Modelling of spit formation: The flexibility of ShorelineS potentially allows for the modelling of spits (unstable landform extending seaward with one free end) under the influence of high angle wave exposure. The capability of modelling spit formations using ShorelineS was assed. For this a case study was used to investigate different aspects of spit formation (such as: migration direction, shape and width) and how (and if) to model this using a coastline model.

More information and a summary on the results of this thesis will be added later.
