De Pos leeft nabij de bodem en haalt daar dan ook het meeste van zijn voedsel vandaan. Het dieet van de Pos bestaat onder meer uit dansmuggen, kleine kreeftachtigen, haften, kokerjuffers en , bloedzuigers en visseneieren en -larven van bij voorkeur de spiering. De prooi wordt voornamelijk waargenomen doormiddel van het zijlijnorgaan en, wanneer het water helder genoeg is, ook door zicht #1.
