Scour protection for suction bucket jackets using artificial vegetation

Suction bucket jackets are a new type of foundation for the offshore wind industry with many advantages, such as easy and noise-free installation, larger water depths than of monopiles and cheaper manufacturing than of jackets. However, conventional rock scour protection is difficult to install and maintain due to limited access to the area between the suction bucket jacket legs. Alternative scour protection designs are being considered, one of which is frond mats or artificial vegetation.

The aim of this project is to develop design rules for the artificial vegetation scour protection and to validate them through experimental flume study. The primary interest is the dependence of hydrodynamic flow parameters  on vegetation parameters, such as height, density, flexibility etc., as well as spatial patch-scale effects.
