The influence of buildings on aeolian coastal dune development

Paired with expanding economical activities within the coastal zone is an increase in demand for buildings (e.g. pavilions) on the beach. These buildings could influence aeolian sediment transport rates towards the dunes and therefore influence dune development. To assure preservation of dune functionalities such as safety and nature a certain volume of sediment transport towards the dunes is desired. The objective of my research is to gain insight on the potential influence of buildings on dune development. This will be realized by focusing on two case areas in the Netherlands, Julianadorp and Sint Maartenszee. There are high resolution elevation (drone) measurements available of these case areas.  By comparing the regular dune development of with the regions with buildings with reference areas were buildings are present I will make an effort to quantify and conceptually understand the influence of buildings on coastal dune development.
