Investigation on the possibilities to use CFD for the design of intake structures

Objective of the internship

Deltares is performing scale model tests of large cooling water intake structures for various industries, mainly power plants . In such tests the approach flow of the pumps is optimised. Model tests are mainly used because the approach flow of these pumps is determined by small hydraulic phenomena like vortices. However, CFD software is becoming better and better and might be used in the future for those application. Deltares is using CFD already for a wide-range of applications. Currently, scale model tests for optimisation of intake structures are performed because that is required by the ANSI/HI 9.8-2012 standard (the use of CFD is not allowed). In June 2016 Deltares will participate in a meeting of the HI committee to discuss the possibilities for using CFD in the optimisation of intake structures. My mission is to prepare this meeting, by getting a good overview of the current status of CFD.

Activities that should be performed to obtain such an overview are:

  • Literature review
  • Discussions with experts within and outside Deltares.
  • Base on these discussions to set up and determine CFD models with STARCCM+ software. The simulations will be performed at the limits of the possibilities of CFD and would therefore be challenging with respect to topics as mesh, turbulence models and settings to be used. The main goal of those simulation is to support statements on the possibilities of CFD, if those simulations are not yet available.
