Turbulence modelling of wall-bounded flows near a cylinder-bed junction due to

waves and currents

currents and assesment of initial stone entrainment

<image>

Experiments have been performed at the Eastern Scheldt Flume in the Hydro Hall of Deltares that focused on visualizing the upstream velocity field of a cylinder-bed junction by using PIV measurements. The goal here was to gain insight in flow patterns and corresponding local stresses that contribute to the failure mechanism of scour protection layers. The objective of this graduation project is to simulate several configurations that were tested for using the open-source CFD software OpenFOAM in combination with the Waves2Foam toolbox. The experimental results will be used to validate the numerical findings.

Currently working on: Identifying roughness parameters from PIV measurementsFinalizing processing of numerical findings regarding potential stone entrainment regions.
