For each type of test a Testdefinition needs to be developed, that can be used for several instances of that type of test. The definition describes how the test is to be performed and what information is collected during the test. This can be general information like customer information, or specific test information like calibrations, locations, roles and procedures. The actual information is stored in a datafile, which can be an MS Excel file or a text-based GEF file (http://www.geffiles.org).

A test is split in five phases, Setup, Measurement, Analysis, Reporting and Filing (SMARF). For each phase the information to be stored is described. This can be a textual (text) or numerical field (var), or a column (column).
During the test, after each phase the correctness and completeness of the data can be checked against the Testdefinition.
