Port sedimentation: quantifying uncertainties

 
Many ports throughout the world suffer from siltation of their berthing and maneuvering areas, requiring maintenance dredging activities to restore navigable depths. The maintenance dredging requirement for large sea ports and navigation channels may exceed tens of millions m3 /year of sediment removal. Due to the expensive maintenance of the ports, the prediction of sedimentation is an important factor for the feasibility of building a port in a certain area. The goal of this thesis is to develop an emulator which contains the important hydrodynamic and morphological processes that takes place in the ports, giving reliable results in a much shorter computational period of time than the complex model.Therefore, first it is necessary to comprehend and identify and quantify the uncertainties in coastal morphodynamic models. Then, good predictions of dredging estimates can be made.
