Introduction
How to setup FAIR in projects? Depending on the question and the type of project several guidelines can be given. These will be described in the following use cases.
- projects with scientific reports
- EU/WB projects
- projects for RWS
Bear in mind, page is non exhaustive. If you have better ideas please add these on this page. We all benefit!
Use case 1 projects with scientific reports and a requisite to store data for reuse.
Topic | Demand | possible with Deltares |
---|---|---|
DOI on publication | yes | no |
DOI on data | yes | no |
data management paragraph | yes | assistance available |
Metadata | yes | yes |
Standardisation | Desired | yes |
data service (i.e. OGC) | no | yes |
long term data storage | yes | no |
Typically the demands for these project require DOI (Digital Object Identifiers), a data management paragraph and FAIR data. Post a message on the intranet group Helpdesk Data for assistance.
FAIR is at least data is Findable, Accessible and Reusable and linked with the publication. The interoperability requirements are limited to storage of data in 'open formats', so in most cases not accessible by machine 2 machine interaction. Minor detail. For this type of projects it is best to search for cooperation with a university which is either part of the 4TU alliance or has its own data repository.
Here some links to a couple initiatives (not exhaustive):

Use case 2 EU/WB Projects
These projects either have no requirements at all and have the demand to offer a kind of public service or business case. Below some topics to consider.
Topic | Demand | possible with Deltares |
---|---|---|
DOI on publication | no | no |
DOI on data | no | no |
data management paragraph | Desired | assistance available |
Metadata | yes | yes |
Standardisation | yes | yes |
data service (i.e. OGC) | yes | yes |
long term data storage | no | no |
Sometimes the demand is to share data with other EU initiatives like EMODnet, OBIS, Seadatanet etc. Post a message on the internet to search for colleagues that can assist you with that specific demand.
In case of unique products like portals and/or other types of tools/dissemination platforms involve the webviewer focus group to find an alternative way for dissemination of data and information. Bear in mind, you need to have budget allocated for this. Via OpenEarth and the option work you can find some examples of the work done.
Use case 3 Projects for RWS
Well this clearly is a special use case. If data are involved within SPA and KPP projects, the are subject to the SLA Datamanagement. Which actually means that there is an agreement to share data in the AQUO format. Now ... this is a bit a challenge, because not all data is available in this specific format. For SPA and KPP project specific requirements should be part of the project plan. Sometimes data management paragraphs are demanded, post a message on the intranet group Helpdesk Data for assistance.
Since 2019 the KPP Project Data and Information hosts and maintains Water Info Extra with the associated RWS Project Archive where data is stored, harmonised and standardised to AQUO.
Topic | Demand | possible with Deltares |
---|---|---|
DOI on publication | no | no |
DOI on data | no | no |
data management paragraph | Desired | assistance available |
Metadata | Desired | yes |
Standardisation | yes | yes |
data service (i.e. OGC) | yes | yes |
long term data storage | yes | yes * |
* with long term data storage means that storage is part of the KPP project Data and Information.
