To ensure optimum performance the local datastore of the FSS (or stand-alone system) should be continued on disk (i.e. it should not be fragmented). If the file becomes large it will eventually become fragmented. The standard windows defragmentation program will often fail to defragment the local datastore. In that case the contig program (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx) can be used to defragment only one file, in this case the local datastore.
