At this stage of the project, the PSAM-user group do not provide real-time information to the live-system. In a potential next project phase (depending on additional funding), it is most likely that this functionality will be developed and implemented in collaboration with the PSAM-user group. For now, the modelled floating trash in the Guanabara Bay is based on seasonal trash sources, which mainly come from the rivers/cannels located near the favela’s. This ‘seasonal trash source’ is used for both the hindcast run and the forecast run.

At the moment (jan 2015), there are still negotiations within the management group of PSAM, whether or not the ecoboat pilots will be equipped with smartphones. If so, than the mobile application from PSAM is used to provide the system with real-time information.

The 3 main functionalities of the mobile application are:

  1. Tracking the real-time location of the ecoboats and sending this information to a webserver
  2. Report spotted trash in terms of volume/density on a scale of 1 to 5 and send this information to a webserver
  3. Report any cleaned trash in terms of a length or area and send this information to a webserver

This information will then be stored in an online database, where FEWS can import the data. Next, FEWS will export this data to the webviewer(s).
