Expert Meeting Levee Erosion 14 September 2023

The Expert Meeting Levee Erosion was held on 14 September 2023 in Delft. The goal of the meeting was to obtain a shared view on the topic of levee erosion/aging for sea/river dikes in changing conditions (drought, animal burrowing, policy changes).

The program included four sessions combined with break-out sessions and plenary discussions:

  • Introduction and opening by Martin van der Meer & Tanja Voogd.
  • Session 1: Impact drought and animal burrowing, insights Hedwige erosion tests.
    • Results Hedwige tests: impact on erodability top layers by Myron van Damme.
    • Levee safety framework animal burrowing by André Koelewijn.
  • Session 2:  Soil structuring and aging, monitor and predict clay layer condition.
    • Top layer profiling in test pits, first results seadikes, application all dikes by Marc Hijma.
    • Soil aging mechanisms, relation with climate proof design, sea or river conditions by Martine van der Ploeg.
  • Session 3: Wave and current induced erosion: physics models, parameters, tests.
    • Rivers/current - typical riverdike, critical and occuring shear stress by Gijs Hoffmans.
    • Coastal/waves - typical seadike, transient overtopping flows by Bas Hofland.
  • Session 4: Introduction Borehole Erosion Test in the Netherlands, US experience.
    • US experiences, applications as a profiling tool, improvements by Jean-Louis Briaud..
    • NL first results (sneak preview), relation with other lab and fields tests by Werner Halter.
