3.1

What pressures act in combination? Measuring the interaction between pressures

  1. improve our ability to separate out the effects of individual pressures and then the cumulative effects of pressures

3.2

How can we reach an acceptable level of uncertainty in pressure /impact results to invest in action

  1. Develop better techniques for Pressure and Impact modelling
  2. Produce interactive maps of priorities - pressures and impacts and contacts.

3.3

Water related adjustments due to climatic changes

  1. An increase in the temperature of water bodies (by rising climatic temperature and by increasing heating load) could impact on the ecological community and these possible shifts are not yet predictable.
  2. Hydrological changes due to water supply by alpine glaciers in summer reducing with consequences for the ecology, navigation and use of hydroelectric power. The understanding of this pressure and how it will impact the achievement of good ecological potential (GEP) in major water bodies needs further research and the associated knowledge on developing a hypothetical ecological community as a final goal indicative of that GEP status.
  3. Improvement of models to be able to help water managers to understand and predict how a water body will react to climate changes, in particular at regional or river basin scale.
  4. How will the changing land-cover (in particular forestry) impact on the water quality and quantity
  5. Adaptation measures for water quality and quantity

Nutrient Pollution

  1.  Improve our knowledge of NO3 movement in zones and groundwater
  2. Looking at by-pass flow from peaks for effectiveness of different programmes of measures
  3. develop methods to reduce the maximum (peak) concentration of NO3 in groundwater to 50mg/l

ICPDR

Hazardous Substances

  1. Implement best available techniques and environmental practices including the further improvement of treatment efficiency

Improving the knowledge on the buffer capacity of soils

3.5

Wildfires

  1. Improve the understanding of how wildfires and its impact on landcover affects water quality and quantity.
  2. How to reduce the siltation of dams following on from wildfires.
