During the pilot implementation, it was shown that much efficiency could be gained by improving the data provision and data processing required to add a new model to the configuration. To increase the efficiency, a set of Excel macros has been developed to generate most of the configuration files. These Excel macros work on data which has been provided in a standardized way. Therefore, two data provision templates have been prepared, as well as a document which gives detailed instruction for populating these spreadsheets. As background information, a document has been prepared which provides information on the macros that will use the data spreadsheets. In addition a spreadsheet is available to convert NGR-coordinates from kilometer indications towards the character based OS-reference system (original, sample for Test Itchen).

Providing Locations Information

The Excel spreadsheet Empty_DataTemplate.xls contains predefined table structures to provide all relevant information on:

  • the model data set in general
  • GW abstraction points
  • observation boreholes
  • SW gauging stations
  • SW lateral points (abstractions and discharges)
  • stream accretion profiles
  • IdMapping

When filling in the template, please note the following:

  • The spreadsheet is a collector for information from various resources, mostly GIS-resources and MODFLOW data files. Please fill in all required columns, and not only the portions available in the GIS-resources.
  • ensure correct mapping of time series (in the model data files) to licences, it is crucial to identify the line of occurrence of a licence in a stress period of the WEL or STR file
  • please provide complete data set at once, do not forget licences which are excluded in e.g. the Historic run, but included in the Fully Licenced run.

Providing Time Series

Time series are a primary source of data in the system. In addition to observation records, model data files, containing abstraction and discharge time series, could be a source of information. The system can import XML-file based time series which meet the EA-timeseries format or the DelftFEWS Published Interface (PI) format.

Time series encapsulated in the Modflow data files are transferred into PI-format by the Modflow Module Adapter. Note however, that a Modflow STR-file does contain one time series per cell. Multiple discharges in one cell, or discharges vs. natural runoff, cannot be distinguished properly.

Since the pilot has shown that EA-staff faces difficulty to provide the data in the required XML format, an Excel template (NGMS_TMS_Template.xls) has been created. This Excel spreadsheet contains a predefined table structure to provide time series, while it holds an Excel macro to create an XML-file in PI-format.
