Knowing the Dutch coast

Guideline development

Much of the research done by the Marine and Coastal Research group of WL|Delft Hydraulics is eventually supposed to have an impact on coastal policy and management strategies. One way to make this happen is by translating research results to practical guidelines.

Translation of research result in to guidelines is easier said than done. For starters it is not clear what exactly a guideline is supposed to be. Should a guideline deal with the design of an individual shore nourishment or should it deal with the selection of locations to nourish. In line with one of the Proposion 8 by Mark van Koningsveld the answer should probably be 'both'.

If that is the case than any guideline should be tailor made to suit a predetermined objective. If that is the case the frame of reference method which is especially suited for matching specialist knowledge with strategic and operational objectives will be of use.
