Predicting storm impact on coasal dunes

If we want to use XBeach for the assessment of safety it is required that the model is extensively tested and validated. The hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of XBeach have been extensively validated against (1D) flume experiments(Daly et al., 2012; Dong et al., 2009; Williams et al., 2012) and some (2DH) field cases (Lindemer et al., 2010; McCall et al., 2010; Roelvink et al., 2009). Valdating XBeach for beaches with a gentle slope, as present along the Dutch coast, is still required.

Therefore, the overall goal of this research is to improve the prediction of storm impact on coastal dunes with the numerical modeling program of XBeach. The objective of this research is validating XBeach for coastal dune erosion processes at beaches with a gentle slope, by analyze and reproduce the morphological impact of the coastal dunes on the barrier island Ameland by using a hindcast of Ameland of 1 November 2006.
